Nature is a powerful co-facilitator in the therapeutic process. Even before a formal session begins in our therapeutic space, the walk through the forest to arrive there is in itself part of the process (find out more about our therapeutic space HERE). Feeling the ground beneath your feet, noticing the sounds, textures, and rhythms of the woodland, begins to regulate the nervous system. Research shows that time in natural environments reduces stress and anxiety, lowers cortisol, improves mood, and enhances focus and immune function. Beyond these measurable effects, our bodies, minds, and subconscious remain attuned to the rhythms of nature, a connection that has supported human wellbeing for millennia.
Nature has a part to play in all sessions.
This could be just purely through the walk to the therapy space and the surrounding environment that sessions unfold within. Nature/Land based therapies such as eco sensory therapy and social farming can be woven in with other approaches during sessions such as somatic therapies, yoga, breathwork, reflective talking therapies, nervous system regulation, or lifestyle redesign. Some clients may suit a completely nature based approach utilising eco sensory therapy and/or social farming. All sessions are client centred and approaches utilised are based on client goals, strengths and interests.
By embedding therapeutic work within the rhythms and cues of the natural environment, we provide a context supportive of multiple aspects of wellbeing. Read more here about our intentionally designed therapeutic space in the heart of the forest and how we weave nature into the therapeutic process:
Eco-sensory therapy is an evidence based intervention. It blends sensory integration principles with nature-based practice. It uses the sights, sounds, textures, cycles and rhythms of the natural world to gently support nervous system regulation. This approach is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing trauma, anxiety, stress, chronic health conditions, or emotional overwhelm. By helping the body find safety and ease, eco-sensory therapy creates a foundation for healing and meaningful engagement in everyday life.
Social Farming & Engagement with the Land
The social farming environment at Quarries Farm where we are based offers opportunities for hands-on, purposeful engagement with the land. Depending on the client and the context this could include activities such as planting, horticulture, or tending to and maintaining the natural spaces. These experiences provide meaningful, hands-on occupations that foster connection, confidence, purpose, and belonging while working towards goals. They also provide a therapeutic way to explore meaning and learning in a living, dynamic setting.
